How to Get a Real ID in Illinois

A REAL ID in Illinois is a type of identification that meets federal security standards. You will need a REAL ID driver’s license or identification card starting in 2020 if you wish to use your card when boarding domestic flights or entering federal facilities. If you do not have a REAL ID card, you must present another form of identification that meets the federal security standards.

The Secretary of State (SOS) issues IL REAL IDs with a process that is similar to that for issuing standard IDs. If you do not want to get a secure ID, you can opt for a regular identification card or license instead. The main difference in getting a secure card is that you must visit an SOS branch in person rather than completing your service online or by mail. These credentials can be issued when you apply for your first license or ID card, or when you are in the process of renewing an existing document.

Under the REAL ID act, you are required to show various documents when applying for a credential. For instance, REAL ID cards are only issued after you provide documentation that verifies your identity, Social Security Number (SSN) and state residency. On the other hand, the fees and license testing requirements for a secure card are the same as those for standard credentials.

An Illinois REAL ID, otherwise known as a Voluntary Travel ID, is a form of identification that can be obtained from the state’s Department of Transportation (ADOT). These cards are essentially new versions of standard driver’s licenses and ID cards, but they comply with new federal identification guidelines. Under the REAL ID act, a secure credential such as Illinois’s travel ID will be required to verify your identity starting in October 2020.

You do not need to obtain a REAL ID drivers license in AZ if you do not wish to do so. However, having this type of credential will be required to board domestic flights and gain access to certain government buildings. If you do not have a Voluntary Travel ID, you will need to carry an alternative form of federally-accepted identification (such as a passport) after the October 2020 deadline.

In order to get a travel ID, you will need to fill out an application form, gather certain identification documents and visit an ADOT office in person. The only notable difference between a REAL ID driver license and a standard credential is that travel IDs require you to present more proof of identity and residency when submitting your application. Otherwise, the fees and application steps are the same.
