An Illinois REAL ID, otherwise known as a Voluntary Travel ID, is a form of identification that can be obtained from the state’s Department of Transportation (ADOT). These cards are essentially new versions of standard driver’s licenses and ID cards, but they comply with new federal identification guidelines. Under the REAL ID act, a secure credential such as Illinois’s travel ID will be required to verify your identity starting in October 2020.
You do not need to obtain a REAL ID drivers license in AZ if you do not wish to do so. However, having this type of credential will be required to board domestic flights and gain access to certain government buildings. If you do not have a Voluntary Travel ID, you will need to carry an alternative form of federally-accepted identification (such as a passport) after the October 2020 deadline.
In order to get a travel ID, you will need to fill out an application form, gather certain identification documents and visit an ADOT office in person. The only notable difference between a REAL ID driver license and a standard credential is that travel IDs require you to present more proof of identity and residency when submitting your application. Otherwise, the fees and application steps are the same.
