The Illinois Department of Veterans’ Affairs has developed a whole string of state programs and services in support of military members who have been honorably discharged from active military service in recognized war time periods.

These programs and services have been designed with the aim of addressing educational, health, housing, employment, and other challenges that honorably discharged military members are facing. Through these measures, Illinois veterans can apply for a number of benefits provided by the state, including the ones listed below:

  • Illinois veterans home
  • Illinois veterans care
  • Illinois veterans grant

Illinois Veteran Homes

There are four veterans’ homes in the state of Illinois that have official licensing from the DPH and the local VA Medical Center. Eligible for admission in these homes are veterans with military service during:

  • WW2
  • The Korean War
  • The Vietnam War
  • The Gulf War

In addition, those who apply for entry must have entered into their military service from the state of Illinois. If that is not the case, they must have been an IL resident for at least a whole year before applying in order to enter a veterans’ home. As a note, if you are granted entry into one of these homes but cannot make the instant move to the location, you will be put on a waiting list, which gives priority to those who were on the list first.

Note: Peacetime veterans with one year of honorable military service, as well as spouses or surviving spouses may also be eligible for admission after the waiting list of eligible veterans is exhausted.

As for how much it costs to stay in a veteran home, this depends on your income and not your assets. The monthly boarding charge is maxed out at $1,429 and includes everything from medical care to fun activities and food.

Illinois Veterans Care

The Illinois Veterans Care is the first program in the U.S. that serves those veterans who have limited incomes. The Illinois Veterans Care program was created to provide each veteran with access to affordable, quality health insurance and healthcare for a monthly premium of $40 or $70, depending on their income. If you are an Illinois veteran who wishes to apply for this program, simply call 1-877-4VETSRX and the Veterans Service officers will answer any questions you may have.

Illinois Veterans Grant

If you are a veteran and you would like to continue your studies, you may do so with the assistance of the IL Veterans’ Grant Program. This program gives you access to funds that will pay your tuition for any approved state university or college. However, in order to apply, you must meet the following qualifications:

  • You must be a veteran.
  • You must have been honorably discharged.
  • You must have lived in Illinois for at least six months before you entered military service.
  • You must have gone through at least a full year in active duty.
  • You must have gone back to Illinois within six months of your discharge date.

If you qualify, you can obtain an application from a local VSO office.
