How to Apply for a New Drivers License

If you are a new driver who would like to get a drivers license, there are certain requirements to meet in order to receive it. For your convenience, listed below are the most important documents you need to have on hand before you apply for a license to drive:

  • Proof of identity (IL ID card, birth certificate or passport)
  • Proof of residency (bank statement, utility bill or rental/lease agreement)
  • A Social Security Number (for ID verification purposes)
  • Out-of-state licenses (if you are a new IL resident)
  • Proof of paid drivers license fees ($30 for a basic driving license)
  • A recent photo of you

Submit these documents to your local Driver Services Facility. They will then verify your identity and take your photo. Once your documents have been processed and verified, you will have to take three exams (a written test, a vision test and a driving test). If you pass, you will be issued a new drivers license. Also note that all documents must be submitted as originals – copies will not be accepted.

Different Types of Driving Licenses

The procedure for applying for drivers licenses may be different for different kinds of licenses. The documents required for a first-time applicant may differ from those needed to renew or replace driving license. There are also specific documents needed for temporary visitors in IL and for commercial drivers licenses. Therefore, according to the type of driving license, you may obtain:

  • A basic drivers license for which you apply by submitting the aforementioned documents to the Driver Services Facility.
  • A commercial drivers license issued for drivers who use their vehicles to transport goods or hazardous materials, and for commercial vehicles for transporting people or towing other vehicles.
  • A graduated drivers license for new drivers, regardless of age to ensure that they get the experience, skills and support in order to drive more safely and carefully.
  • A restricted drivers license is issued to drivers in small areas if they only need to use the car for basic needs such as shopping for groceries, a trip to the bank or the post office.
  • A temporary visitor drivers license is tailored for non-US citizens who are on temporary stay in the country and want to travel or need a car for transportation.
  • A motorcycle license is mandatory for driving a motorcycle in IL and drivers need to apply for a Class L or Class M driving license, depending on the type of motorcycle.
