CHANGE NAME ON AN ILLINOIS DRIVER’S LICENSE

If you have recently changed your name as a result of marriage, divorce, court order or other personal preferences, you must inform the institutions you deal with in everyday life. These include your credit card companies, banks, hospitals or other healthcare providers, schools, places of employment, club, magazine or membership subscriptions and more.

If you have recently changed your name as a result of marriage, divorce, court order or other personal preferences, you must inform the institutions you deal with in everyday life. These include your credit card companies, banks, hospitals or other healthcare providers, schools, places of employment, club, magazine or membership subscriptions and more.

However, among the most important government agencies to inform about your recent legal name change is the IL DMV. You must inform them about the change promptly in order to update your driving record data. Your new name must be stated on your car title, car registration, state ID card, drivers license and other driving-related documents.

As it is illegal to drive in IL with a driving license that does not reflect recent name or address changes, you must report your new name to the DMV within 30 days of officially changing your name. Getting an updated IL drivers license requires the following steps:

  • Changing your name with the Social Security Administration
  • Changing your name with the Driver Services Department

How to Change Your Name With the Social Security Administration

The very first step towards changing your name legally is to change it with the Social Security Administration. There, you will be able to complete the process to change name and use your new name everywhere else once you have done so. In order to initiate changing your name with the SSA, you will need to present the following documentation:

  • A complete Application for a Social Security Card (filled out and printed)
  • Proof of identity (such as your birth certificate or driving license)
  • A document supporting reason of name change (the document must address you with both your old and your new name)
  • Proof of reason of name change (divorce decree, marriage certificate, court order)
  • Proof of citizenship (for those born outside the U.S.)

Once you submit these documents, the SSA will update your Social Security number record and will issue a new Social Security card to you. Note that even though your name will be updated, your SS number will remain the same.

How to Change Your Name With the Driver Services Department

When the SSA has your new name in its records, you can proceed to change your name on your drivers license. Reporting a name change cannot be done online or by mail – you must do it in person for identity verification reasons. To change your name on your drivers license, you have to apply for a corrected drivers license. To do that, you must personally visit a local Secretary of State facility and apply with the following documents on hand:

  • Current valid drivers license
  • Social Security Card (if needed)
  • Proof of name change (marriage certificate, court order, divorce decree)
  • Proof of paid fees

Note: Drivers of commercial vehicles who would like to change name on CDL license must report it with the DMV within 10 days of changing their name and obtain a corrected drivers license within 30 days of changing their name.
