If you prefer finishing the process in person, the officials at the local SOS office will request you to submit proper documentation, including the following:

  • Your current active IL driving license or identification card
  • $6 fee for replacing one plate or $9 fee for replacing two
  • Proof of car ownership, such as your title
  • Police report, if the license plates were stolen from you
  • The broken/damaged license plates, if they were not lost or stolen
  • A filled-out form VSD-190 for a vehicle transaction

In addition to applying in person, you have the option to apply by mail. However, in order to do so, you will have to be the registered car owner and your active address must coincide with the address featured on your Vehicle Services Department record.
