IL VSD allows residents to renew car registration in one of the manners below:

  • In person
  • Online
  • By mail

How to Renew Car Registration in Person

In the state of Illinois, the IL SOS will not mail your renew notice to you, so unless you sign up to have your renewal notice mailed to you, you must complete the car registration renewal process in person at your local Secretary of State’s office.  The officials in the office will ask you to present the following items:

  • Your renewal notice
  • Payment for the renewal fee

Renew Car Registration Online

Renewing car registration online is fairly straightforward and hassle-free, as long as you are eligible to do it.  The first thing you need to do is visit the official website of the Illinois SOS and click on the renewal application. In order to fill the application with the proper vehicle information, have the following documents on hand:

  • Your vehicle registration identification
  • Payment for the applicable fee
  • Your PIN number (check your renewal notice)
  • The number of your car insurance policy, the agency and the date your coverage expires

Prior to applying, make sure you meet the necessary requirements for online application. Remember that you are not qualified to have your car registration renewed online, if one of the following applies:

  • The information of your vehicle is not accurate.
  • You want to send your sticker to an address that is outside of the state.
  • You are part of the Circuit Breaker program.
  • You want to change the characters on your license plate.

Note: Print out the transaction receipt because it will later serve as proof for your car registration renewal.

How to Renew Car Registration by Mail

If you prefer to complete the car registration renewal by mail, all you need to do is gather the following documents:

  • Your signed renewal notice
  • Proof of payment for the renewal fee

Once you have collected the documentation, put in a mailing package and mail it to the address written on the notice. Your new vehicle registration documents will be mailed to you within 30 days.

How to Renew Car Registration by Phone

To renew expired car registration by phone, make sure you have the following documents before making the call:

  • Your registration renewal ID code and PIN (found on your renewal notice)
  • Payment for the renewal fee

To complete the process, call the Illinois SOS at 1-866-545-9609 and follow the verbal instructions.

  • Cost to renew a passenger car: $101
  • Cost to renew a truck: $101
  • Online transaction fee: $2.25
